Global packaging firm Amcor has awarded Leighton Contractors a $110 million contract for the design and construction of civil & building infrastructure at the Botany B9 Paper Mill in Sydney.
Leighton is responsible for designing and constructing the paper machine building, stock preparation building, product store waste paper yard, mill offices, control room and other ancillary works. The Botany B9 Paper Mill will generate high quality recycled paper from waste collected throughout the Sydney area. It will produce paper-based products across a wider range of weights and create packaging that is lighter, more efficient and more environmentally friendly.
Executive General Manager of Leighton’s Industrial & Energy Division, Peter Handel, recognizes that Amcor has become a global industry leader for its packaging innovation. “The new Botany Paper Mill represents the future of environmentally sustainable paper manufacturing worldwide,” he said.
Part of the reason that Leighton secured the Amcor bid is that it has successfully delivered other manufacturing plants for the company over the last ten years. Mark Chilcote, General Manager of Leighton Contractors’ Industrial & Energy Division said, “Over the last ten years, we have successfully delivered Stages 1, 2 and 3 of the Amcor Glass Container Manufacturing Plant in Gawler, South Australia.”
“These container glass plants have firmly established Amcor as a leading supplier in that business sector and we are confident the new Botany Paper plant will be similarly successful,” Chilcote added.
Leighton seems to be continuing to keep up the momentum from 2010, when it secured a number of contracts throughout Asia, the Middle East and Australia.
